Day 163: Holy Shit, Volcanoes!

8/26/20; mile: 1,973; elevation: 6,306 ft

Can you guess why I may have slept in a bit? Full pack, full water carry….oh and maybe a bit of beer and food coma. Hey, that’s trail life. Days of struggle, hunger and thirst; sporadically divided by days of gluttony. To a normal person, this sounds like a disorder. To a thru-hiker, this is our life choice. You can’t have the good days without the bad. And the good days are SO much better when you’re in town!

After my slow start, Tommy-So-Happy caught me. We walked for some time together while in the trees, but after a break our spaces drifted apart. And then the trail popped out and meandered amongst the volcanic cones, called the Sisters. And even better than yesterday, instead of ponds and lakes, we have creeks. Such sweet, cool, flowing portals of fresh water. Some would also be quite impressed with the obsidian all over the place (the amount is quite impressive), but I’ve spent a lot of time around Clear Lake in California. Obsidian is no rare thing around there. Hence the impressive history of human activity in that area for thousands of years…
